No One is Perfect
Why do we expect an animal should be . . . after all people are largely to blame for many of the animal's imperfections!

THE "PERFECT" ANIMAL?
When adopting an animal, most people are looking for a great personality, good health and, most of all, exemplary behavior. In a perfect world all animals would have these qualifications. However it is rare, even under the most controlled breeding programs, to create . . .

THE "PERFECT" ANIMAL

Those of us in rescue understand the plights that some of these animals have endured. Even if there has been no prior abuse, just being exposed to a shelter situation can be a personality-altering experience.  YOU try to spend one caged night on a concrete floor . . . cold . . . scared . . . surrounded by ear-splitting noise . . . wondering why your family has not come for you . . . strangers standing outside your cage staring in at you. How can that NOT impact you?

Animals deserve a lot of credit . . . they do better in the human world with all that we ask of them and impose upon them -- so much better than we would do in their world. It is all too common to find a rescue dog filled with fear . . . who mistrusts humans . . . or becomes frightened of other dogs . . . or is reactive to noise . . . or . . . all of the above. THIS is where we at The Ark can make a difference. We evaluate the temperament of a potential rescue, not looking at “what’s wrong with the animal” but trying to look at the world from the animal’s point of view. We try to anticipate his or her individual needs and with a bit of luck we can place that animal in . . .
THE "PERFECT" HOME!

Meet Nick!
Nick

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your "voice" is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting eye.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements.  And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.  Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you.   Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
